IOM-NGO Humanitarian Consultations

IOM-NGO humanitarian consultations are jointly organised by IOM and ICVA, with the goal of strengthening effective and principled crisis response.

The overall objective of the Humanitarian Consultations is to contribute to better protection and assistance of crisis affected people and displaced populations. To this end IOM seeks to engage in effective policy, program and coordination consultations with partners that will help to strengthen cooperation through providing a forum for open, action-orientated discussion on humanitarian partnerships. The consultations will maintain a focus on the Principles of Partnership that are foundational in all humanitarian partnerships, and help leverage the value of diversity and complementarity in advocacy, policy development, and emergency response.

 

As a frontline humanitarian crisis responder, Humanitarian Consultations will be alternated between its HQs in Geneva and regional hubs (IOM Regional Offices). That way, every second year the consultations would have a different regional character, bringing dialogue closer to field realities and policy-to-practice initiatives, and enhancing the inclusion and accessibility for representatives of local and national NGOs. When organised in a region, IOM and ICVA may also involve a partner NGO in the organisation of the event.

Description

29-30 October, Istanbul, Turkey

The fifth annual IOM-NGO Humanitarian Consultation took place on 29-30 October 2019, Istanbul, Turkey.

The Consultation brought together some 60 participants from IOM and humanitarian NGOs. The overarching theme was humanitarian access in emergencies and protracted crises, with a focus on the MENA region but including relevant discussions from other regions for experience sharing and learning. The discussions delved into good practice in leveraging our respective strengths to improve humanitarian coverage in volatile and insecure environments and reach those most in need.

Description

The 2017 IOM- NGO humanitarian consultations took place in Nairobi,  Kenya, on 11-12 September 2017.

The consultations convened under the theme of complementarity, coherence, and collaboration, provided an opportunity for IOM and humanitarian NGO partners to deliberate on the topics of 1) Internal Displacement and durable solutions for IDPs; 2) Mixed Migration – Addressing the needs of migrants in vulnerable situations; 3) IOM-NGO Partnership in Cluster Coordination; and 4) Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).

Description

The first IOM-NGO consultations were held on 30 June 2015, in Geneva, Switzerland.

The consultation had three clear objectives:

  1. To provide a platform for discussion and partnership development between IOM & NGOs.
  2. To further engage partners in the ongoing development of IOM’s Principles for Humanitarian action (PHA).
  3. To identify possible ways forward in partnership between IOM and Humanitarian NGOs.
